1.1) Why did the soldiers break the legs of the criminals who were crucified with Jesus? (v.31) The next day was Sabbath Day and the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, so the Jews wanted the criminals on the cross to die before the sunset. 1.2) Why didn’t the soldiers break Jesus’ legs? (v.33) Jesus had died already 1.3) Why didn’t God allow Jesus’ legs to be broken? 1.4) Why did Jesus die earlier than expected as compared to the two criminals? (John10:18, Mark15:43-44) Jesus had the authority to lay down His life at any time. Jesus had accomplished His Father’s will, and there would be no meaning to live any longer. 1.5) How long would you like to live? I would like to live my life until I have finished the tasks God has given to me. 2.1) Which side of Jesus was pierced by the soldier’s spear? (V.34) Left side of Jesus was pierced where the heart is located. 2.2) Can you explain how water and blood flowed out from the spear-wound? Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus were reserved for Jesus’ funeral arrangement. 3.3) Who did attend Jesus’ funeral? It was God’s arrangement 5.4) What else was new one used by Jesus? 6.1) Why did Joseph of Arimathea hide his identity as a Christian from others? If the public knew that he was a follower of Jesus, it would have cost him too much. He would have been expelled from his religious and social positions and would also been persecuted. 6.2) What had motivated him to become bold enough to go to Pilate and ask for Jesus' body? When he saw the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross, his faith became bold enough to face any risk of his own personal sacrifice. 6.3) What was the risk that Joseph of Arimathea had to take for doing that? If Pilate suspected that Joseph was sympathetic with crucified criminal, Pilate might have put Joseph through a similar Execution. Joseph would have also taken a chance of being persecuted by religious leaders. 7. What would Nicodemus remember when He saw Jesus’ death on the cross? (John 3:13-14) In His early public ministry, Jesus predicted to Nicodemus about his death on the cross with an explanation of its meaning from the Old Testament. Life Application: 1. Is your faith based on the miracle or Jesus death on the cross? People who had experienced His miracles avoided Jesus when they faced an endangerment to their lives. Secret believers like Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus became bold in faith when they saw Jesus died on the cross. People want to see or experience God’s miracle in order to have faith in Jesus. But a real faith comes from the meditation of God’s love manifested through Jesus on the cross. Jesus have loved me so much that He had died for me in order to give me an eternal life. 2. Would you like to have a worldly success that is envied by people or to have a reputation that is respected by people? (Proverbs 22:1) I would like to have a reputation respected by people. A person’s worldly success will disappear with the person’s death. Reputation lasts longer. 3. How can you earn respect from others? You can earn respect from other by having Godly character. We make every effort to gain a worldly success everyday, but making an effort everyday to build a godly character is more important and valuable.
