John1:5-13 (B)

1.1) Why did God send John the Baptist? (v. 5, v. 6)

(1) The world was blind and could not recognize the light.
(2) He came as a witness to testify concerning that light.

1.2) How did he know his mission? (Luke 1:13-15)

John the Baptist was full of Holy Spirit since his conception in his mother's womb. The Holy Spirit talked to him
about his mission and gave him passion for his mission.

1.3) What should we be careful in giving a testimony or in preaching? (1 Corinthians 2:4)

Answer

(1) My part is to witness Jesus to other people. The part of Holy Spirit is to convict these people.
(2) Only the name of Jesus will be lifted up. If not careful, the name of the person who gives the testimony might be lifted up.

2.1) Why did Jesus come to the world and dwell with people?

Answer

Jesus came to the world to save people from God's condemnation and lead into the kingdom of God by showing God's love.

2.2) How many kinds of world can you think about? (v.1)

Answer

(1) The physical world where we live.
(2) The music world, the sports world
(3) The world system defying God.

2.3) Which world is mentioned in verse 9?

Answer

The world system defying God is mentioned in verse 9. For example, university holds an examination on the Lord's Day.

3) Why didn't the world recognize the true light? (v. 10)

Answer

The world did not recognize the true light because it was:
1) Spiritually dead. The world had no sensitivity to the light.
2) Spiritually sleeping. People were drunk with the worldly affairs.
3) Spiritual ignorant and could not discern the true light.

4) Why didn't his own people (Religious leaders and King Harold) accept Jesus?

Answer

His own people didn't accept Jesus because they were:
1) Spiritual ignorant. Jesus was not the type of the Messiah the religious leaders were waiting for.
They were waiting for the Messiah who could conquer The Roman Empire.
2) Affected by their own interests. King Herod could not accept the Jewish King, Jesus. If not, he
had to give up his position as a king.

5) How can you become a child of God?

Answer

1) v.12a: I can become a child of God by
    (1) Receiving Jesus as the gift of God. (2) Accepting Jesus as the Savior.
2) v.12b: I can become a child of God by believing His name and trusting Him through what is revealed in His name.
3) What is meaning of the name of Jesus Christ? (Matthew 1:21) The name Jesus means that He would save His people
    from their sins. The name Christ means that He is anointed (poured oil over the head in the Old Testament) by the Holy Spirit
    as the King, the High Priest, and the Prophet.

6.1) What is the requirement a child must have to become a Jew? (v. 13a)

Answer

A child becomes a Jew through blood link. If the parents are Jews, their children become Jews automatically. The Jews
are descendants of Jacob through Abraham.

6.2) What is the requirement a Jew must have to become a child of God? (Luke 3:8)

Answer

A Jew can become the child of God through the repentance of sins and acceptance of Jesus as the Lord and Savior.

7.1) How did the captain guarding the temple become a Roman citizen? (Acts 22:27-28)

Answer

He bought Roman citizenship through his desire.

7.2) Can you become a child of God because of your fleshly desire, money or political power? (v. 13b)

8) Can you become a child of God by keeping the Law to a higher standard by using your own will power? (v. 13c)

9.1) What is the meaning of being born of God? (v. 13d)

Answer

It means to be born into the family of God. God is spirit, so it also indicates a spiritual birth.

9.2) How did God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit participate in your spiritual birth?

Answer

(1) The Father, according to Ephesians 1:4, chose to save me before the foundation of the world.
(2) The Son, according to John 19:30, finished the work of my salvation on the cross 2000 years ago.
(3) The Holy Spirit, according to John 16:8, convicted me of my sins and helped me to repent and accept
Jesus as my Lord and Savior at the time of my salvation.

Life Application:

1. Can you give a short testimony about how you were born-again?

Answer

One or two Christians can give his or her testimony on how they became a Christian.

2. If you were not Christian, would you let the true light of life shine into your heart?

Answer

Yes or no with many excuses.

3. Let us discuss the reason why people do not accept Jesus.

Answer

1) I don't believe God.
2) I do not understand the Bible.
3) I wait until I understand Jesus better.
4) I got hurt from a Christian.

Prayer:
Thank You Jesus for Your love. While I was spiritually blind, you came down as the true light to open my spiritual eyes and gave me eternal life. Use me to witness this light of salvation (Jesus) to the world. Fill me with the Holy Spirit, so that I will be faithful to my mission with passion like John the Baptist. I pray in the name of Jesus, Amen!
